Project Title: The American Baptist Missionaries and the Coming of the Book in Assam
Abstract of Project :
My Fulbright-Nehru research project is part of a larger endeavor to document and understand the intellectual and material history of the book in Assam. American Baptist missionaries introduced print technology in Assam in 1836 thus catalyzing the process of modernity in Assam where print played an important role (as elsewhere in India) in the construction and transformation of social and cultural identities. During my tenure in the U.S. I will review crucial but under-researched archival material (including reports, letters, primers, grammars, and issues of periodicals brought out by the American Baptist Mission Press) is available at locations like the Andover-Newton Theological Seminary, near Boston.
